How the five-year clock works

Your certification carries an expiration date five years out from when you earned it. Once it has been five years since you took a test, ASE says it’s time for the matching recertification test. Pass it and the clock resets for another five years.

Going early doesn’t buy you anything extra. Per ASE’s registration page, if you recertify early you are not credited with the time left on the original certification; the new expiration date is five years from the date you recertify.

Because each test you hold has its own expiration date, recertification is a rolling obligation, not a single event. A tech with six certifications earned in different years has six separate clocks.

Can you recertify after your ASE certification expires?

Yes. ASE’s own FAQ says you may take the recertification tests even if your credentials have expired. The only requirement is that you were previously certified in that specialty area. You don’t go back to the full certification test.

That also covers Master. ASE says Master Technician status is not for life, and if you lose it because one or more required certifications lapsed, it can be reinstated by taking and passing the recertification tests.

If you’re leaning on the Renewal App instead, expect it to be slow for an expired cert. ASE’s Renewal App page says an expired certification takes 8 to 12 months from the date you subscribe to earn enough credits to reinstate it. When you do earn the 8th credit, the new expiration date is 18 months out, rounded to June or December. If you need the cert current sooner, the recert test is the faster route.

How can you renew ASE certification online?

ASE gives you three ways to renew. Two of them never put you in a test center.

Remote recert testing. ASE’s register-now page describes its online remote proctoring platform as a way to take all recertification tests without stepping into a testing center. You need a secure online environment at home or at work.

The Renewal App. Only A1 through A9 are included. You see one question for each certification you hold every 30 days, and you’ll have access to at least 12 questions per certification during your subscription. Each correct answer earns 1 credit for that area, and 8 credits extends that certification by one year. The subscription is $52 a year no matter how many certifications you have. The app is a steady drip, not a quick fix. At one question per cert every 30 days, 8 credits takes at least 8 months, so it suits a tech who is current and wants to stay that way. For a cert that’s already expired, or anything outside A1–A9, take the recert test.

What is different about a recertification test?

It’s shorter. ASE’s FAQ says recertification tests usually have about half the number of questions as the regular tests. The exception to know: the L1 recert is the same length as the regular L1. It’s the same subject area you were certified in, and you need to have held that certification before to sit it.

Pricing: a standard recert is $62, and L1, L2 and L3 recerts are $124. There’s no L4 recert yet: ASE’s L4 study guide says the L4 recertification test will be available in 2027. The real savings is the cap: ASE stops charging recert test fees at $186 per order, so a big renewal year tops out at $220 with registration. Half the questions still means real questions on current technology. Don’t treat it as a formality.

Common scenarios

Your cert already expired. You still take the recertification test, not the full test, as long as you were certified in that area before. Our ASE practice tests cover every series if you want to shake the rust off first.

You hold Master and one test lapses. Master Automobile requires holding all eight A-tests at once. The day one of them lapses, you’re no longer Master, even if the other seven are current. Pass the recertification test for the lapsed one and Master is reinstated. This is why techs who carry Master track their earliest-expiring test, not the average.

Several certs come due close together. Put their recert tests on the same order so you pay one registration fee and hit the test-fee cap sooner. See ASE test cost for how the registration fee works.

You’re checking what your state requires. ASE certification is a national credential, separate from any state licensing. See state mechanic license and ASE requirements before you assume a lapsed cert does or doesn’t matter where you work.

Mistakes and misconceptions

• Thinking an expired cert means starting over. It doesn’t. ASE lets previously certified techs take the recert test after expiration.
• Assuming the Renewal App is the fast fix for an expired cert. ASE says it takes 8 to 12 months to reinstate an expired cert through the app. The recert test is quicker.
• Recertifying early to “bank” time. Early recert doesn’t carry over the remaining time. The new five years start on the day you recertify.
• Letting Master quietly drop. A single lapsed underlying test removes the designation; people don’t notice until a customer or employer asks.
• Cramming all recerts into a panic month. Spread reminders across the year so you renew calmly and on shared orders.
