A9 is optional for Master Auto
Master Automobile Technician is A1–A8. A9 (light diesel) is a useful specialty, but it is not required for Master.
You can usually test before the experience clears
You can sit most tests now. ASE just won't issue the certification until you meet the 2-year work-experience rule (1 year with qualifying training).
Recert hits every 5 years
Certifications are valid 5 years. Miss the window and the credential lapses — track it in myASE before the shop gets busy.
One test still carries the registration fee
Every test window adds a $34 registration fee on top of the $62 per test ($124 for advanced L tests). Plan the order you can afford.

ASE questions read like the bay: a symptom, some evidence, and two techs disagreeing about the cause. The win is reading the data to the most-likely fault — which is exactly why memorizing flashcards alone leaves techs short.

Which ASE test do I actually need? +
Pick by the work you do, not by collecting codes. There are 59 ASE certification tests across series. For passenger-car techs, A1–A8 cover the eight core systems and together earn Master Automobile Technician; A9 (light diesel) is a separate specialty. Medium/heavy truck techs earn Master with T2–T8 (T1 is separate). Use the finder above to land on the exact code.
Do I need work experience to get certified? +
Yes — ASE requires two years of hands-on experience to issue most certifications, and a relevant training program can substitute for up to one of those two years. You can usually take the test before you have met the requirement; ASE simply holds the certification until your experience is on file.
How much does an ASE test cost? +
Each registration window has a $34 registration fee, and most tests are $62 each. The advanced L1–L4 tests are $124 each. Recertification tests cost the same as the first attempt, so it pays to prepare and pass the first time.
How often do I have to recertify? +
Every five years. Each certification shows its own expiration date in your myASE account, and you keep it active by passing the recertification test before it lapses.
What is the myASE Renewal App? +
It is an optional way to keep your A1–A9 automobile certifications current between test-center visits for a yearly fee. It applies only to the A-series and is a renewal program, not a shortcut around the regular tests for other series.
Are ASE questions hard? +
About two out of three techs pass on the first try. The questions are scenario- and diagnosis-driven — they reward reading symptoms and evidence to find the most-likely cause, not memorizing parts. Targeted prep for the exact test is what moves the pass rate up.
